Where I live:
The Great Flats are located in the Capital District region of Upstate NY, and date back to 1661, when Arent Van Curler applied to Peter Stuyvesant, the Dutch Governor of New Netherland to purchase a tract of land called Groote Vlachte (Great Flats) from the Mohawk Indians.
In that year, Van Curler, with 14 other residents of Rensselaerwyck, settled on an alluvial tract of land alongside the Mohawk River. The Dutch continued to settle in the area and the aquifer became the most important sole source of water in the area, today watering over 147,000 residents.
It’s easiest to say I live outside of Albany, although closer to Schenectady would be a more true statement. Many people haven’t heard of Schenectady however, although I must point out that the character Grace Adler from Will and Grace was from Schenectady!
Lots of people have pre-conceived notions of Schenectady, NY. The city has had a hard time ever since the bust of GE some years ago. When I first moved to the area almost 6 years ago now (!!!!) it lived up to its reputation. However, it has slowly been making a comeback, and the State Street area is now pretty nice with lots of fancy schmancy restaurants. The Schenectady of today is NOT the same.
I haven’t really found a lot of local blogs on Schenectady and the environs nearby (where I live)…so I hope to post pictures and stories on my blog about the happenings of the Great Flats and the local area.

A Year in the Life of the Great Flats
[…] The Great Flats ← This Week in the Life of the Great Flats […]
Hi Chelle!
I just stumbled across your blog and am LOVING it!! I saw your photo in your guest post you did of the Urban Homestead right outside of Pasadena, that belongs to the Gervais’ family if I’m not mistaken- I actually was going to attend one of their summer potlucks but had to cancel, it’s on my list of 101 things to do. I have spent the last year completely facinated by homesteading and making baby steps daily toward a less is more lifestyle. I am currently reading The Good Life by Helen & Scott Nearing – they were true pioneers!
Keep on keepin on!
xoxo

You have a great blog that encompasses so many of the things that interest me! I am also striving to “live of the land,” eat local and preserve summer foods for the winter. I live for the day that I have my farm out in the country 🙂 I can’t wait to read more of your adventures!
Thanks!! Your blog is pretty great too!
